Though the Heavens Fall
“Let justice be done, though the heavens fall”… was perhaps one of the most orientally entrenched philosophy's ever to have been used and propagated by occidental sociologists. I believe the Latin verse for it is “Fiat Justitia Ruat Caelum”. The beauty of using and hearing it by a glass of wine, or in some political gathering for that matter, is indisputable but the problem with this philosophy however, is the immensely difficult task of inducing the will of implementation.
The “Kahrizak” detention center in Tehran witnessed the death of three election protesters in Iran in June 2009. After having been closed immediately, over a dozen officers and prison guards were arrested and put on trial. Last week it was announced 2 of these guards have been sentenced to death and 9 others sentenced to longer prison terms as 1 guard was acquitted. The inhuman and unspeakable act by any standards was massively and rightfully echoed and reported throughout the world, sometimes a bit exaggerated but even the exaggeration was understandable even purposely tolerated. However, a year on and the perpetrators have now been sentenced, but hardly reported. The BBC who spent pages and pages with different star reporters analyzing the events following the “Kahrizak” tragedy, only mentioned the sentencing once “live” and a day on its site before archiving it into oblivion, the article came with so many question marks in it, that a neutral reader would lose interest even reading the article onto the second paragraph.
The actual message one might want to add, is how the western democracies justify their inaction on “Abu-Gharib” and “Guantanamo”, “Bagram Prison” and the “Basra” detention center, where demonstrably tortures, rapes, sexual harassments and murder took place…… We all know in what a ridiculous manner justice prevailed for the victims of these places . This hypocritical approach by the western judiciary can only be explained as political. The phrase “Rule of law” has become a very selective entity, and if we don’t follow up on the crimes committed by the western forces within the last 10 years of war, then this wanton apathy shall, as proven on different eras of time, inevitably come and haunt the hard won stability of our so appreciated western civilizations.
