The Iranian election
On this very last evening before the Iranian Presidential election, one has to admit to its unparalleled originality by Iranian standards, one dare say, unprecedented and unique and probably never to repeat in this manner again, campaigning style. The debates that took place and the tone in which it was conducted, is proof of the frustrations bottled up in the political hierarchy of the Iranian war generation against the gray eminence of the Islamic Republic in Iran. The Iranian President Ahmadinejad, whom to my surprise enjoys a massive support amongst the rural population, came out with a social stink bomb, accusing his main rival (Mussavi) of being supported by a financially corrupt yet exceptionally powerful individual, the individual (Rafsanjani)whom to Iranians of all political and social backgrounds is not only known as a two time President and Parliament speaker , but also exorbitantly notorious in matters of finance and undeclared wealth managed by an endless network of family members throughout the Iranian economy.
Mussavi has no role in Rafsanjani's dealings (has to be mentioned),and that is, from our perspective not the issue. The more important issue is the fact that Rafsanjani saw in the accusations against him the necessity to write an open letter to the Supreme Leader of the Republic and actually and factually threaten him to stop Ahmadinejad from going too far, and should he (Rafsanjani) fall, then ! the Supreme Leader goes with him. That is in my opinion the biggest side effect of the mudslinging initiated by Ahmadinejad. The fact that Rafsanjani is the head of the "Assembly of Experts", elected every 8 years and has the power (unlike what is propagated in the west)to replace the Supreme Leader is the main point which has to be considered. Rafsanjani mentioned in his open letter, the whole Islamic system to be in jeopardy and should the Leader not intervene, certain legal steps would be inevitable.(those who know the Iranian mentality know what is meant).
What all these developments could mean to the outcome of the election is unpredictable, but one thing is sure, the Iranians have never been so polarized to this extend and Rafsanjani's letter to The Supreme Leader of Iran has moved many undecided voters towards Ahmadinejad, that alone, could be a decisive factor in the upcoming election, furthermore the fact that Ahmadinejads rivals have to share peoples votes (split into three)is another important issue often overseen in the heat of a campaign. Whatever the outcome, the losers of this particular election are going to be very very..... very upset.
